Inside A Gear: Panconbasura (Gears 3 Beta Rank 100)

“Inside a Gear” is an interview series with people from throughout the Gears of War community about their thoughts on the franchise, and how they became the fans they are today.

Aldo Cauvi (Panconbasura) achieved, what to many, seemed impossible – he earned his wings in the Gears 3 beta. This impossible feat was confirmed yesterday as completely legitimate by Epic’s Joe Graf, who also said that Panconbasura was the sole person in the beta to earn their wings.

We approached Aldo, a proud Peruvian Gears of War fan, to ask him about himself, why he was so driven to attain his beta wings, and how he did it. In return, we found a someone who is far more than just an incredibly dedicated Gearhead, and shared with us a brutally honest and surprising story about his life as a Gears fan over the past few years.

Aldo’s journey with the beta began at 4am EST on the 18th of April when the Bulletstorm Epic Edition phase of the beta started, just over a month before he would end up achieving Rank 100 in the beta on May 15 at 5pm EST. Straight away, Aldo knew the best way to begin ranking – and quickly set to playing as much as he possibly could.

When the beta was released, I felt very inspired to do my best and get as far as I could. Since I’m a really devoted fan of the Gears of War franchise, I did it happily.

I played public matches most of the time because the time between matches is shorter than ranked matches – there are next to no waiting times so I could earn a lot of points very quickly.

Aldo quickly began to pour day upon day into the beta, quickly pulling ahead in rank above most others, pushing himself to the limit and finding his footing with the brand new game modes.

Literally I lost one month of my life, sleeping only 4 or 5 hours daily for one whole month.

The first two weeks I played public TDM and ignored King of the Hill for the most part – it was fun but the matches were too long and the XP earned wasn’t enough in comparison. On the second weekend when CTL was released I started playing and noticed that the games were much faster (1 or 2 minutes per round) and the XP earned was much higher than any other game type. That’s why I decided to stay in this mode – playing only public CTL let me focus on trying to kill as much as I could as every kill counts twice the XP in this mode. I made sure to keep my consecutive match bonus alive as well.

But pulling away in front of the crowd wasn’t all fun and games for Aldo, as the Xbox Live community quickly turned on him for being so far ahead of others, mostly with disbelief.

Every 5 minutes I received messages hating or insulting saying that I made a hack or glitch, or that I have no life, or that I’m rich and don’t have to work or study… and these things still get to you even if none of them are true. I finished school and I’m an economist and consider myself very responsible.

I never experienced such thing like this, being on top of a popular game such as Gears of War and getting abuse because of it.

And there was a reason Aldo could find the time to pursue his hopes of achieving Rank 100 in the beta – an unfortunate accident that caused Aldo to lose his hearing, and later, his career.

I had an accident 2 years ago where I suffered an acoustic trauma and lost my hearing, becoming completely deaf a little over a year ago. Because of this incapacity, I lost my job and have yet to find one again – in Peru where I live, the opportunities for deaf people just don’t exist.

That’s why I have a lot of free time for gaming while I try to raise the funds to get the operation to recover my hearing. Now, I really don’t have many things in my life that makes me happy and don’t have many things to do – but the beta was definitely one of those good things.

And just like the reasons behind his avaliable spare time, there is far more to earning Rank 100 in the beta than just an icon on a screen – it’s an achievement to be savored.

I’ll hardly repeat something like this… but I really needed to do this. I just wanted to show myself that I can achieve whatever goal or dream I have and make anything come true if I put the enough effort and dedication. One of those things will heal someday.

We’d like to extend a massive thank you to Panconbasura for providing us with such an interesting and honest story to share with you all, and a huge congratulations on his achievement to be the only person out of 1.29 million to achieve Rank 100 in the beta.

I can relate to a degree. I only made it to level 59 (almost 60) by the end of the beta, but I work full-time (50+ hours per week). In the last couple weeks of the beta, I was already getting messages almost every match, telling me to get a life or “get laid”, solely as a response to people seeing my level. I just don’t think anyone outside the hardcore community can understand what it means to be a dedicated Gearhead.

Honestly I didn’t have the slightest idea this was going to have any kind of media impact in the world of videogames.
I just did it to show myself I could do, not to show anything to anyone or intended to Epic or MS or some company to help me in any way. I want to be very clear with this please!

It did it because in the last year I had to go through many difficulties and needed to encourage myself with something.

Very impressive. I only played the last 5 days of the beta and managed to get to rank 20, which isn’t bad, so to get to rank 100 in 4 weeks is just an awesome achievement for anyone.

The only downside is that, from what I’ve read, the ranks don’t carry over from the beta to the retail version

  • Bob

Great story and I hope the best for Aldo. What about Epic doing a fundraiser for the awesome, dedicated fan. Prove for him that you appreciate your fans and support our love and appreciation of videogames.

  • Bigshot232

be honest here, if you did see someone that high a rank without reading this article, you would have all thought the same. i would have thought the same. however i would not be so petty or immature to take the time to write out a meesage to an unknown person across the internet, nothing gets acomlished other than aggravationg yourself and the person your sending it to.

that beening said, dedication is something to be admired in any form and being able to achieve the end rank in a unfinished product is unheard of and i quite litterally tip my hat off to you (i’m doing it now as i write XD)

Bob 23-05-2011, 14:04

Ya this is not that amazing……this guy had no job and no life….he was not playing for fun, he was playing for points!!! on a BETA!! lol
if u ask me that makes his an A**H*** not an awsome player

Diiviine 06-06-2011, 15:31

Yeah, thats why no one asked you.

Nick 23-05-2011, 14:37

Great story and I hope the best for Aldo. What about Epic doing a fundraiser for the awesome, dedicated fan. Prove for him that you appreciate your fans and support our love and appreciation of videogames.

Bigshot232 23-05-2011, 16:11

be honest here, if you did see someone that high a rank without reading this article, you would have all thought the same. i would have thought the same. however i would not be so petty or immature to take the time to write out a meesage to an unknown person across the internet, nothing gets acomlished other than aggravationg yourself and the person your sending it to.

that beening said, dedication is something to be admired in any form and being able to achieve the end rank in a unfinished product is unheard of and i quite litterally tip my hat off to you (i’m doing it now as i write XD)

Like stated above. It would be pretty cool if the lv 100 achievement was named after him example “I found Aldo” very punny
